Upon analyzing a selection of consumer electronics about 77% of purchases were determined to be influenced by Internet research. Conducted by Hall and Partners, the study looked at online behavior and purchases of digital cameras, MP3 music players, computers and flat televisions. The amount of time varied from 9 to 15 hours which equally corresponded to the price of the product. Higher ticket items were researched the longest and the average research time for purchasers was 12 hours. The study was conducted in June and surveyed more than 2000 US adults.

An informal survey amongst shoppers in Abt’s retail store found that more than 60% of customers shopped on Abt’s website before coming into the store. Marc Cook, one of Abt’s floor sales managers states, “Customers have become much more savvy about the technology before they come into our store. There are tons of websites out there providing information. Some are helpful and correct, while others are providing bad information. Luckily, we have some of the most knowledgeable sales staffs in the industry so if a customer wants us to educate them, we are more than happy to do that.”

The survey discovered higher priced items received more research as these are thought of as purchases. 29% of purchases were made online with 55% using a search engine to find the site, 46% went directly to the site and 10% found the site via a third party link. The Internet was determined to be the #1 source of information with a direct or indirect influence on $ 15.2 billion of consumer electronics buying.

Abt has been busy over the past year incorporating more online tools to help their online customers learn more about their products. There are now more than 64 buying guides online ranging from simple explanations for coffee makers to more technical descriptions on new technologies like HD Radio and Blu-Ray/ HD-DVD. Guidester is another tool that helps lead customers to the right product to fit their needs. A customer is asked a few simple questions in regards to how they will use a product and the guidester offers matched suggestions based on those needs. There are currently 12 guidesters on the site now and Abt hopes to double that number before the end of the year.

Blue Ray Technologies, America’s first indie Blu-ray disc manufacturing plant, is now becoming the largest indie Blue-ray disc mastering facility in the U.S., according to BRT founder and chairman Erick Hansen.

It will also be the only indie that can handle rewritable disc mastering and will provide pre-mastering as well, all complex yet necessary components to creating Blu-ray discs that show what true 1080p hi-def is capable of, rather than just putting upgraded DVD content on a Blu-ray disc as some do. The consumers will come to expect this, it is one of the steps that make BDs eye-popping and a clear step up from DVDs.

The process will allow for advanced encoding, authoring and menu design and will apply to games, movies and any other digital content that can be put on BD. As for the rewritable discs, they are especially useful to computer users as well as publishers and corporate users who want a shorter run that does not require large manufacturing plants.

The new BRT mastering design is also more cost-effective than even the current DVD mastering process by reducing the number of steps involved and can eventually help lead to BDs in the price range of DVDs.

“We are building the world’s largest indie Blu-ray mastering and pre-mastering facility. In addition, we are the only indie American company that can make a rewriting stamper,” said Hansen. “We have more experience at this than any other indie on the planet. The discs will be mastered, encoded and delivered right.”

Since larger capacity optical discs require the pit to be smaller on the disc, current DVD mastering technology was not compatible for use in next generation optical discs.

Blue Ray Technologies is planning to open multiple Blu-Ray disc production facilities across the U.S, starting with a facility near Hollywood to be close to the indie and major studios that have now all adopted Blu-ray.

The new facilities are designed to be capable of handling the next generation of movie and game discs, Blue-ray 2.0, which gives an interactive web dimension to the consumer, and offer up to “five layers of entertainment,” according to Hansen, whose Hollywood move puts him closer to the studios he has worked with for years. The Spokane, WA facility is running and will have a hard opening in the upcoming weeks.

Hansen has also been in negotiations with the major studios through an affiliated company for downloadable high definition content over the Internet. While being a pioneer in DVD and now championing Blu-ray discs, Hansen also believes in delivering the best in movie and game content in whatever form the consumer wants it. With the end of the format war, and 70% of the U.S. having bought or buying HD screens (according to Nielsen figures), there is an “overwhelming” demand now for instant product in Blu-ray is the present and future in the arena, according to Hansen.

“The movie studios are being a little smarter this time around. They have chosen to support both formats,” said Mr. Guidolin. In fact, even the founding father of HD-DVD, Warner Brothers, is supporting the rival Blu-ray format. This is good news for consumers. “I think consumers see that there isn’t going to be a clear winner for a long time — if ever. So they are ok being early adopters.”

Christmas season is also the time you’ll see the studios pulling out the big guns to meet the Christmas rush. Titles like Seinfeld: Season 7, Superman Returns (Available in Blu-ray/HD-DVD & DVD) and Pirates of the Caribbean 2 are just a few of the major releases arriving in time for Santa to deliver.

NetBlender unveiled DoStudio, the first GUI tool for creating advanced content for HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc, at the Media Experience ’07 conference hosted by META. The new product, which was demonstrated to a gathering of veteran industry professionals, drew praise for its ability to streamline the production of next generation advanced content.

What is advanced content? It depends who you ask. For consumers, it’s a bevy of interactive special features found on the new high definition disc formats. In addition to their high definition video quality, HD DVD and Blu-ray each feature an interactive layer – HDi for HD DVD and BD-J for Blu-ray – that enable next generation functionality such as seamless menus, picture-in-picture video commentaries, Internet-delivered video and audio, and other game-like interaction previously available only when DVDs were played on PCs.

But for DVD developers, advanced content is a headache.

“Among the challenges faced by DVD developers who are tasked with creating HD titles is that building the interactive layers is cumbersome, requires proficiency in multiple programming languages, and is not a part of their established production workflow,” said John Harrington, NetBlender CEO. “DoStudio is designed to address these challenges.”

Featuring a graphical user interface that handles many development tasks visually, DoStudio frees the developer from hand-writing hundreds of lines of code. And when code-tweaking is required, the developer uses an easy-to-learn adaptation of XML called DoML, or DVD One Markup Language. When the Advanced Content is ready for viewing, the DVD One compiler writes the final code in any next generation format. The compiler currently supports HDi and netBlender for DVD-Rom. BD-J support will be released later in 2007.

DoStudio’s interface includes a visual layout editor that allows developers to arrange graphic elements with drag and drop ease, a keyfame animation editor, automatic remote control button assignment, an image list manager and more. For special features that require getting down and dirty with DoML code, DoStudio’s interface features code assist, so the developer doesn’t need to memorize the entire API.

“DoStudio is a powerful addition to the DVD One toolset,” said Denny Breitenfeld, NetBlender CTO. “We estimate that the time it takes to build HD special features can be cut by as much as 50% in many instances. But more importantly, DoStudio is built on a robust architecture that maximizes performance and compatibility with set top and software players.”

Compatibility and performance are issues that loom large in the DVD development community. Developers who grew comfortable with the simpler task of creating standard DVDs are now facing memory leaks, unhandled exceptions, and other challenges previously reserved for software developers. DoStudio is built on a proven architecture that prevents these problems.

DoStudio is the latest component added to DVD One, NetBlender’s first-of-kind solution for creating interactive layers for HD DVD, Blu-ray, and DVDs. DVD One allows DVD developers to produce highly interactive applications for all three DVD formats from a single authoring environment. Henninger Media Services (Henninger), Washington, D.C.s premier production and post-production company, recently completed its annual post production work on the Kennedy Center Honors. This marks the 25th consecutive year that Henninger has been involved with this prestigious event, providing editing, audio, and color correction services for the biographical films shown at the gala on December 6, 2009. The two-hour event will air on CBS at 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 29, 2009. This will be the first year that the show is produced and broadcast in high definition. Last years broadcast of the show won an Emmy for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special.

The five distinguished recipients honored at the 32nd annual celebration of the arts were Mel Brooks, Dave Brubeck, Grace Bumbry, Robert De Niro and Bruce Springsteen. They were recognized for their lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts.

The Henninger staff looks forward to this project every year, which usually commences around Labor Day when members of the Kennedy Center Honors Productions staff move into Henningers Arlington facility. Over the next three months, the respective staffs work closely with each other every step of the way. Kennedy Center relies on Henninger for technical and creative expertise, including high definition editing and color correction; audio mix and mastering services; engineering and project management; and possible Blu-ray finishing.

Per Sam Crawford, Henningers Director of Engineering, the significant difference in the post production and final mastering of this years show is that we had the added challenge of accommodating both 16×9 high definition and 4×3 standard definition images for the honorees biographical films. To help overcome this obstacle, Henninger created custom graticuleslines to superimpose on the screen during the offline editing process, to show the editors what would be seen by both high definition and standard definition viewers.

The key members of both staffs always do a projection test at the Kennedy Center two nights before the big event, with a primary focus on the audio levels. The hardest challenge is met by Henningers Senior Mixer, David Hurley, who helps ensure that what the production team heard in Henningers audio suite transfers seamlessly to the amphitheater type of environment at the Kennedy Centers Opera House. The Henninger staff takes notes and makes necessary changes that night or the next morning. Jef Huey, Henningers Senior Editor on the project, characterized the overall process as a lot of fun, due to the films unique complexities. In the end, we are always confident that well end up with an outstanding final product due to the collaboration of such experienced personnel at both organizations!

Son Of Rambow is a cheeky, coming-of-age comedy set in suburban England in 1982, which became the surprise hit and hot ticket of last year’s Sundance Film Festival.

The film stars talented young newcomers Will Poulter and Bill Milner as two little boys who embark on a heart-rending and hilarious adventure. 10 year old Will (Bill Milner) has led a very sheltered life. His strict religious and moral upbringing has excluded the adolescent joys of music, TV and movies and excitement is in pretty short supply. Until that is, he finds himself caught up in the extraordinary world of Lee Carter (Will Poulter) – the school terror and maker of bizarre home movies.

Armed with a big video camera and even bigger ambitions they attempt to make a home movie “Son of Rambow”, in homage to their hero Rambo. Supporting cast includes Jessica Hynes (Confetti), Eric Sykes (Harry Potter and the Goblet and Fire) and Ed Westwick (Gossip Girl, Breaking and Entering).
